Trends in Maternal Mortality: 1990 to 2013

Estimates by WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, the World Bank and the United Nations Population Division

Globally, there were an estimated 289,000 maternal deaths in 2013, a decline of 45 per cent from 1990. The global maternal mortality rate (MMR) in 2013 was 210 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, down from 380 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in 1990. However, hidden within these figures are enormous inequalities: The MMR in developing regions was 14 times higher than in developed regions.

The Demography of Adaptation to Climate Change

Politics and an oversimplified understanding of demographic dynamics have long kept population issues out of serious discussions in the framework of climate negotiations. Within adaptation actions, however, this is beginning to change, and this volume is intended to provide a framework for taking that change forward, towards better, more evidence-based adaptation. It provides key concepts linking demography and adaptation, data foundations and techniques for analyzing climate vulnerability, as well as case studies where these concepts and analyses illuminate who is vulnerable and how to help build their resilience.

Contraceptives and Condoms for Family Planning and STI/HIV Prevention

External Procurement Support Report 2012

Access to reproductive health, including family planning, is recognized as a human right. Yet the importance of a steady and reliable supply of contraceptives is often overlooked as a priority on the development agenda. Support from donors is critical to improving and ensuring the security of essential contraceptives and other life-saving reproductive health commodities. Many developing countries plan to strengthen and improve contraceptive security. However, these countries are still largely reliant on aid from external partners and organizations in order to help keep pace with needs in their countries, which may vary according to the population dynamic unique to each country. In 2012, the London Summit on Family Planning inspired global momentum to extend the benefits of universal rights-based voluntary planning to poor and marginalized women and girls.
