Strengthening Advocacy at UNFPA with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

In 2012 and 2013, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation provided support to UNFPA to strengthen transition to the new Executive leadership and advocacy work in family planning. Through this grant, funds were provided to 18 countries with high unmet need for family planning.

External Procurement Support Report 2012

Access to reproductive health, including family planning, is recognized as a human right. Yet the importance of a steady and reliable supply of contraceptives is often overlooked as a priority on the development agenda. Support from donors is critical to improving and ensuring the security of essential contraceptives and other life-saving reproductive health commodities. Many developing countries plan to strengthen and improve contraceptive security. However, these countries are still largely reliant on aid from external partners and organizations in order to help keep pace with needs in their countries, which may vary according to the population dynamic unique to each country. In 2012, the London Summit on Family Planning inspired global momentum to extend the benefits of universal rights-based voluntary planning to poor and marginalized women and girls.

The Maternal Health Thematic Fund (MTHF) Annual Report 2012 gives an account of the results achieved in 2012 by the fund through targeted interventions in high maternal mortality countries. Advocacy and demand-creation for maternal and newborn health has been high on the agenda; raising awareness on and commitment to maternal health globally, regionally and nationally and creating demand for services at community level.

The Global Programme to Enhance Reproductive Health Commodity Security

Annual Report 2012

This annual report describes results and good practices in 46 countries of the UNFPA flagship thematic fund to achieve reproductive health commodity security. In 2012, governments and partners took action to ensure that national health systems have the capacity and resources to provide a steady supply of quality, affordable essential supplies. Record-high donor support of $181 million in 2012 brought the total support for this five-year programme to $565 million, building on global momentum for family planning.

This report, prepared for the United Nations Commission on Commodities for Women and Children’s Health, provides a review of three contraceptive commodities that are considered to be overlooked or underutilized: the female condom, hormonal implants and emergency contraception.
