Access to reproductive health, including family planning, is recognized as a human right. Yet the importance of a steady and reliable supply of contraceptives is often overlooked as a priority on the development agenda. Support from donors is critical to improving and ensuring the security of essential contraceptives and other life-saving reproductive health commodities. Many developing countries plan to strengthen and improve contraceptive security. However, these countries are still largely reliant on aid from external partners and organizations in order to help keep pace with needs in their countries, which may vary according to the population dynamic unique to each country.
In 2012, the London Summit on Family Planning inspired global momentum to extend the benefits of universal rights-based voluntary planning to poor and marginalized women and girls.
