UNITED NATIONS, New York – As the 58th session of the Commission on the Status of Women opened in New York, UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, and the World Bank Group convened a high-level side event to focus efforts on a landmark partnership to promote regional peace, security and development in Sub-Saharan Africa. UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin and representatives of the World Bank were joined by Ministers from Benin, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Niger, who shared their experiences on addressing these issues in their countries.

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his wife visited Sierra Leone to mark the end of the United Nations Integrated Peace building Mission in the country and a shift to a more development-focused presence. Mrs. Ban Soon-Taek took this opportunity to visit various UNFPA-supported programmes, alongside First Lady Sia Nyama Koroma.

As we commemorate International Women’s Day and celebrate the many achievements of women and girls, we should also remember that for far too many, the ability to live a healthy, productive life free from violence, to fully enjoy their rights, remains an aspiration. So today is also a time to recommit ourselves to delivering once and for all on the promise of gender equality, women’s empowerment and sexual and reproductive health and rights for all women and girls everywhere.

United Nations, New York – More than 300 United Nations Volunteers have supported UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, to deliver on its mandate in nearly 70 countries over the past seven years. The two agencies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding reaffirming this long-standing development partnership.

UNITED NATIONS, New York — One hundred days after typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines and left behind massive destruction and loss of lives, much remains to be done to fully bring affected communities back on their feet. UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, estimates that there are more than 250,000 pregnant and 169,000 breastfeeding women in the typhoon-hit areas. Some 1,000 childbirths are taking place every day, with 150 expected to experience potentially life-threatening complications.

UNITED NATIONS, New York — A new report finds that growing inequalities will undo significant gains in health and longevity made over the past 20 years. To sustain these gains, the United Nations ICPD Beyond 2014 Global Report argues that governments must pass and enforce laws to protect the poorest and most marginalized, including adolescent girls and women affected by violence as well as rural populations.
