Some 800 women a day die unnecessarily from pregnancy and childbirth – almost all of them in the developing world.
Although the figures have improved significantly since the animation here was produced, the bottom line is the same: Too many women are dying from preventable causes.
And vast productivity is lost when these women die or get disabled as a result pregnancy or childbirth.
We know the steps it would take to deliver a world in which every pregnancy is wanted and every childbirth safe.
By investing an additional $4.1 billion to provide family planning plus maternal and newborn services, we would actually save money because with so many fewer unintended pregnancies, the cost of providing obstetric and newborn care would be less. And we would be improving the lives of women, children and communities.
