Scope of Work

Managing UNFPA Media and Communications Branch media monitoring:

  • Being UNFPA’s eyes and ears in earned media: managing UNFPA’s daily media monitoring activities, using a variety of tools and manual searches to track in real time and analyze media coverage of UNFPA and the issues at the heart of its mandate.
  • Collecting and analyzing coverage received by UNFPA’s key events, activities and publications; compiling reports of the coverage.
  • Compiling and distributing daily morning digest of clippings about UNFPA and its mandate to UNFPA staff.
  • Monitoring and alerting Media and Communications Branch management of potential crisis communications situations, tracking the development of these crises and advising on appropriate actions to take.
  • Leading on MCB’s expansion of Meltwater media monitoring software to regional offices and providing support to colleagues using the platform.
  • Monitoring media trends beyond UNFPA’s echo chamber in wider public discourse, including social media and popular culture.
  • Identifying and reaching out to strategically interesting journalists.

Supporting media activities and engagements:

  • Analyzing UNFPA’s audiences and identifying key media to reach them.
  • Drafting talking points for media appearances by senior management and liaising with journalists and media outlets to respond to information and interview requests.
  • Drafting and editing media materials, including Q&As, key messages, press releases, web, and other major corporate communications materials for internal and external audiences.
  • Working on messaging, media outreach, media monitoring, and coverage analysis for the State of World Population Report and other UNFPA publications, activities and events.
  • Identifying newsjacking and longer lead opportunities for UNFPA to insert itself into influential media.
  • Developing and pitching stories and other content to mainstream and online outlets.
  • Managing UNFPA’s media clippings libraries.

Supporting management of UNFPA Goodwill Ambassadors:

  • Supporting UNFPA activities with current and future Goodwill Ambassadors and their social media activations.
  • Leading due diligence processes for UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador vetting and appointment at HQ, regional and national level.
  • Researching and identifying potential celebrity spokespersons at the national, regional, and global level, and assisting with the appointment of such personalities.

Other communications priorities:

  • Support with organizing and managing media and communications-related events, including virtual events.
  • Serving as knowledge management focal point for media relations team.
  • Working closely with UNFPA social media team to identify and harness shared opportunities between social and traditional media. • Providing speedy, flexible, and reliable support to the media team on any other projects

Requirements

Education

Undergraduate university degree in a related field is required. Advanced university degree is an advantage

Experience

  • 1-2 years of professional experience in international media relations or journalism 
  • Excellent writing/ editing skills required
  • Understanding of modern media landscape (both traditional and digital)
  • Social media and popular culture savvy
  • Ability to process and present large quantities of data
  • Good planning and project management skills
  • Proven team player, ability to multitask and work to tight deadlines, flexibility and ability to learn new skills quickly
  • Knowledge of French/Spanish/Arabic is an advantage
  • Familiarity with gender equality issues, sexual and reproductive health, human rights, international development and youth issues would be an asset
