Somalia is experiencing a devastating crisis. Four years of insufficient rainfall have led to water shortages, the loss of pastures, livestock, and livelihoods, and rising food prices. This has caused millions of Somalis to flee their homes for camps and settlements. Over 80% of these displaced people are women, girls, and children. Many of them have had to walk for days while malnourished, sick, and destitute. These challenges are even more difficult for pregnant or lactating women. It is estimated that 918 women in the displaced population will give birth every day in the next three months, with 15% of them experiencing complications that can be life-threatening.
Somalia has one of the highest maternal mortality ratios in the world, and this crisis is putting additional strain on an already weak health system. Without qualified birth attendants, health services, and facilities, more and more mothers and newborns will lose their lives.
