Women’s Contributions to Peace and Security Reflected in Quilt Exhibition

 

UNITED NATIONS, New York -- On the 101st anniversary of International Women’s Day, 8 March, UNFPA will sponsor a major quilt exhibition that illustrates the hopes, fears, and challenges that women face all around the world. The exhibition is a tribute to the strength of women and a promise to support their efforts to take care of themselves and their families. It is also a testimony to their role in weaving the social fabric of their communities.

“In a world of 7 billion and growing, every person should enjoy equal rights and dignity,” said UNFPA Executive Director, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin. “By advancing women’s and girls’ health and rights, we can make greater progress towards sustainable development and build a world of opportunity for all.”

Some of the 20 quilts at the exhibition were made by women in developing countries to address issues affecting their daily lives; others by North American artists reflecting on the issue of women, peace and security. Together, they represent a call for solidarity of the women of the world to work together to defend and protect women, and to empower them to be active agents in peace processes.

When: Opening reception at 6 p.m., Thursday, 8 March. The show will remain on display until 27 April.
