The first in a series of meetings organized by UNFPA’s Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) to mark ICPD/15 focused on the topic “Migration and its Implications for Development and Population Change in the EECA Region”, and was held on 3 December 2008 in Vienna, Austria, following the International Conference “Effects of Migration on Population Structures in Europe” organized by the Vienna Institute of Demography (VID).
The meeting built upon other recent UNFPA events addressing migration, such as the training workshop on international migration, held in Minsk , Belarus (May 2008). The objective of the meeting was to identify the issues related to migration that are of priority importance for the countries in the EECA region, the challenges that they create, and the ways and means to address them within the framework of the policy-making process. In addition, the participants were expected to identify the main messages about migration in the EECA region that need to be brought up in the context of the ICPD@15 process.
