The Position:
The incumbent will undertake and lead the communication and visibility related initiatives for the Female Genital Mutilation component of the Spotlight Initiative African Regional Programme, including the work with the Africa Union/African Union Commission (AU/AUC) and other regional initiatives of the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation: Accelerating Change. Spotlight Initiative is an initiative between the United Nations and European Union that support and enhance a regional approach to eliminating Sexual and Gender Based Violence and Harmful Practices including female genital mutilation. UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation is the largest global programme addressing female genital mutilation and it supports national efforts in 21 countries, in addition to undertaking global and regional level initiatives. The incumbent will report to the Coordinator of the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation: Accelerating Change and will be stationed within the Technical Division UNFPA Office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Job Purpose:
The rationale for having a communication specialist is to support communication, visibility and knowledge management work for the implementation of the Spotlight Initiative Africa Regional Programme through the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of FGM.
You would be responsible for:
● Lead communication and visibility related undertakings for the Spotlight Initiative  Africa Regional Programme in close collaboration with African Union Commission and other regional partners, particularly the  implementation of a communication  campaign for the African Union Initiative on Eliminating FGM - The Saleema Initiative
● Support the overall communication initiatives of the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation
● Contribute to the knowledge management efforts of Spotlight Initiative Africa Regional Programme through the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation
● Establish and strengthen strategic partnerships with various stakeholders and actors engaged in communication work 

Education:  

▪ MA Degree from a recognized educational institute in communication, media or international relations.

Knowledge and Experience: 

▪ 5 years of experience with continental and international institutions in communications and advocacy 

▪ Experience working in communications and advocacy with Institutional bodies and UN system is an asset

▪ Experience in using technology as a medium for communication and knowledge management   

▪ Good understanding of UNFPA and key regional institutions such as AUC and ECA

▪ Ability to take initiative, multitask, work independently and proactively;

▪ Strong reading/writing and analytical skills

Languages: 

▪ Fluency in English; French will be an advantage.
