Consultancy - Part time 

Purpose of consultancy: 
The Research Specialist will support the overall coordination of the research project titled “Understanding the implementation of SDGs in the context of the advancement of rights and development of people of African descent, particularly women, girls, and young people''. He/She will work in close coordination with  research organization/s and other relevant partners to ensure the quality of the deliverables. The position will also coordinate the internal and external partners  a reference groups with the objective to develop and bridge gaps in data, knowledge, and evidence for People of African Descent (PAD), as it relates to the Sustainable Development Goals with a spotlight focus on Sexual and reproductive health and UNFPA’s three transformative results.  

     Deliverables:

The initiative for People of African Descent will partner with research organization/academic institution or/and other relevant Afro-Descendant stakeholders and institutions,  to develop data and evidence to increase the understanding of the implementation of SDGs in the context of advancing the rights and development of people of African Descent. The research will provide a clear and compelling intersectional analysis that highlights People of African Descent journey for sustainable development, including challenges and opportunities. 

●    The Research Specialist will be responsible for coordinating the project and contributing to the workflow of the PAD 2024 work plan activities under the strategic pillar of data and evidence generation. including developing the research project and implementation plan.
●    Identify research organization/academic institution and relevant Afro-Descendant stakeholders and institutions
●    Develop Terms of Reference for reference groups.
●    Review and provide feedback for research deliverables. 
●    Coordinate with relevant stakeholders and incorporate the feedback into every deliverable. 
●    Working proactively with team members and other relevant UNFPA units and offices on a knowledge management and communication plan for the research with clear timetables and deliverables.  
●    In collaboration with M&E and communication colleagues, work proactively with programme and project teams to identify opportunities for capturing and sharing knowledge, and disseminating information about major progress and results of the research findings.
●    Coordinate external validation process. 
●    Other tasks as needed and relevant. 
The consultant will report to the Programme Advisor of the People of African Descent Initiative.

Expected Travel: 
The work will be remote based. 

Required Expertise and Qualifications:

Education:
Advanced University degree in public health, statistics, social science, or other related disciplines  with a focus in the field of sustainable development.

Knowledge and Experience:
●    Minimum 5 years of experiences in sexual and reproductive health related research, working in development programme response (with UN-Govt.-INGO) is required
●    Must have worked in health programming and research and demonstrated experience using evidence for action for marginalized groups specially for people of African descent is an asset.
●    Must have experience working in partnerships with UN, research organizations, academic institutions and civil society organizations.
●    Must have experience managing research projects at global level with multi-sectoral expert teams.
●    In depth knowledge in research methodology required; and experience with statistics software such as R, SPSS is an asset.
●    Experience in managing complex projects and organizing conferences, working groups and other project and knowledge management activities.
●    Ability to work independently in a cross‐cultural environment. 
●    A record of publication for a variety of audiences is desirable.

Languages:
●    Fluency in English, knowledge of another UN language is an asset
