The consultant will provide technical coordination and support for a multi-national project on:

  • Strengthening population data systems in humanitarian settings;  
  • Generating new insights into the drivers and consequences of adolescent/youth migration to/through major city transit hubs in the Middle East, North and East Africa; and
  • Demographic data quality assessments and descriptive statistical analyses of population/demographic data from refugee and humanitarian settings.

The consultant will provide coordination and research assistance to Population and Development Branch’s (PDB) mixed migration and humanitarian data projects. Responsibilities will include:

  • Program coordination with UNFPA country offices, regional offices, and institutional partners;
  • Conducting and supporting background research;
  • Maintaining bibliographic databases and constructing literature reviews;
  • Supporting the quality assessment of field-based data collection work, and quality assurance of field operations;
  • Contributing to periodic mixed-methods analyses;
  • Provide ongoing communication and routine note-taking during meetings, focus group discussions, and workshops;

Interim deadlines

  • Literature review synthesis: mid-July 2017
  • Weekly data quality assessment mini ports: July – August, 2017
  • Mixed methods analysis report: September 30, 2017
  • Draft summary report of mixed migration data: November 15, 2017 
  • Final deadline: 31 December 2017

Possible travel to support consultative workshops and/or field work in the Middle East, North and East Africa

Qualifications and Experience1

  • 1-2 years experience in international health/development field research
  • Bachelors degree (required); Masters degree (preferred)
  • Strong communication skills and expertise in project coordination
  • Proven organizational capacity in complex, multi-national work environments
  • Literature review construction and bibliographic database management
  • Excellent writing skills, and synthesizing research/policy reports
  • Prior exposure to social science methods – both qualitative and quantitative
  • Prior exposure to management of human research ethics an asset
  • Prior exposure to migration and SRH issues in low/middle income countries an asset
  • Competency with productivity software:
  •  Microsoft Office, including MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint.
  •  Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets

Language Skills: English (essential), French (preferred) & Arabic (preferred)
