Background

The Consultant is located in the Gender, Human Rights and Culture Branch (GHRCB) in the Technical Division and reports to the Gender-based Violence (GBV) Advisor and FGM Senior Advisor, Gender, Human Rights and Culture Branch (TD).  

Duties and Responsibilities

The consultant will be responsible to support the GBV and FGM portfolio of the Gender, Human Rights and Culture Branch  and will have a range of responsibilities from analysis, writing and product finalization to logistical and coordination work between the different harmful practices. Work will cover a wide scope of issues in the GBV and FGM coordination portfolios of the Branch and the consultant will be expected to manage multiple tasks and roles concurrently and efficiently.

Key tasks under the GBV Portfolio:
Provision of day-to-day support to the GBV Advisor including:
• Analysis and research support to GBV programmes initiated from HQ - including document drafting, drafting presentation materials, preparation of background material for SG reports (on VAW, migration and trafficking and others), briefing points and so on;
• Assistance with preparation of programme documents of initiatives supported from HQ such as AWPs, ToRs, meeting minutes, review of draft consultant products, etc, related to the Global Joint Progamme on Essential Services for Victims and Survivors of Violence and the EU Inter-regional initiative on Son Preference;
• Coordination support to meetings and logistical preparation including travel and visa arrangements for participants, management of venue logistics, liaising with resource people, document preparation for meetings, report writing, etc;
• Attending meetings, both Fund-wide and inter-agency foras – instances include the meetings of the UN SG’s Campaign on VAW, the UN Trust Fund on VAW and others; 
• Management of relationships with vendors for services such as translation and publication of documents; and,
• Assisting in other tasks as required. 

Key tasks under the FGM Portfolio 

Contribution to knowledge management and sharing

• Synthesize and document the UNFPA experiences with FGM to feed into ECOSOC, General Assembly and Human Rights Council reports, as well as the reports of the Secretary General on FGM and The Girl Child;

• Assist in compilation, organizing and dissemination of key lessons learned in FGM programme;
• Update and inform MCB with HQ, regional and country levels results/achievements and knowledge products, while also identifying innovative ways to communicate and disseminate newly created tools and resources to staff, the JP com community of practice and relevant partners;
• Liaise with UNFPA Midwifery Programme to plan and strategize support to the Midwives engagement to eliminate FGM Campaign.
• Assist with the Regions, NY, PDB and CSF the finalization of the DI-Monitoring regional and global database, including identifying improvements areas of the software for a friendly use.
• Carry out any other duties as may be requested by the Coordinator of the Joint Programme or the GHRC Branch Chief

Qualifications and Experience:

1. Postgraduate degree in social sciences or related fields with specialized knowledge in the field of gender and SRH.
2. At least 2 years of experience in working with gender and GBV programmes and issues. Prior experience in developing countries, including in conflict/post-conflict/humanitarian settings is an asset.
3. Fluency in English. Knowledge of other working languages of the UN is an asset.
4. Strong analytical and writing skills.
5. Ability to coordinate programme activities and multi-task under pressure and to deadlines.
6. Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members from different national and cultural backgrounds.
7. Knowledge of UNFPA systems and agency mandate an advantage.
