The Position:

The Security Specialist is located in the UNFPA Somalia’s Mogadishu Country Office and ensures the safety and security of all UNFPA personnel, eligible dependents, resources, assets, facilities, programmes, and projects in the area of operation, in addition to promoting, enabling and supporting UNFPA programme delivery in accordance with the policies and procedures of the UN Security Management System.

You will report to the UNFPA Regional Security Adviser under the overall guidance of the UNFPA Representative.

Qualifications and Experience: 

Education:  

  • Master’s Degree preferably in Business Administration, Political/Social Science, Psychology, Military Science, Law Enforcement, or similar fields with five [5] years relevant experience.

    OR

  • A Bachelor’s degree in the above fields with seven plus a military or police academy diploma with [7] years relevant experience will be accepted in lieu of a Master’s Degree.

     

Knowledge and Experience: 

  • For Master’s Degree holders, minimum 5 years’ experience in the relevant field. Ability to work closely with UN counterparts, government officials, IP’s, NGOs and any other multi-lateral institutions
  • For Bachelor’s Degree holders, minimum 7 years’ experience in the relevant field. Ability to work closely with UN counterparts, government officials, IP’s, NGOs and any other multi-lateral institutions
  • Formal training in security risk management
  • Previous experience of working in a conflict/post-conflict or crisis environment is essential.
  • Practical and professional experience in the military, police or humanitarian work is required
  • Ability to expeditiously learn, understand and implement Country specific and United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS) policies and procedures;
  • Excellent knowledge of the UNSMS, combined with a solid understanding how to work/operate in Humanitarian settings
  • Ability to effectively deal with stress factors typically encountered in security management;
  • Good technical skills to understand and consolidate the varying specializations such as electronics, communications, and other matters that may impact on staff safety and security.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with: mission leadership, security officers in other organizations, specialists in other fields related to security, representatives of local and national governments and the non-government community, with sensitivity and respect. for diversity
  • Must be prepared to work in a hardship, highly pressurized and sometimes hazardous environment.
  • Knowledge of the United Nations business, operations and programming cycle.
  • Knowledge of United Nations Country Office structure; roles and responsibilities of the Senior Management, DO, SMT, UNDSS and UN Security management System.
  • Competency in the usage of technology, including communications technology (navigation applications, messaging systems, VHF radios, satellite telephones) and office technology (MSOffice, including Excel, Outlook, Teams, Word etc) is required.

Languages: 

  • Fluency in English both written and spoken is required. Knowledge in other UN languages an asset
