The Branch Chief works under the overall direction and guidance of the Technical Division Director who is the direct supervisor of the post. There are four Branches in the Technical Division: Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH); Commodity Security Branch (CSB); Gender and Human Rights (GHR); and Population and Development (PD). The Chief also ensures an integrated, synergistic and systems approach to the work of the Branch, and thus its contribution to the work of the Division and the Fund as a whole.
Education:
Post-graduate University Degree or equivalent (preferably Ph. D.) in demography, statistics, population studies, economics, or a related field in the quantitative social sciences that is relevant to population and development.
Knowledge and Experience:
15 years experience of increasingly responsible professional experience in public administration and international development of which at least 8 years has been at the international level
- Job knowledge and technical expertise – the incumbent is expected to be an expert in the field and recognized authority in population and development methods, research and policy;
- Experience supporting governments on population and/or development related policies is essential;
- Understanding the human rights and gender dimensions of population policy is essential;
- Technical expertise in at least one of the key components of modern population data systems (e.g. population and housing census, civil registration or geospatial data), is essential;
- A record of quality research in demography, epidemiology, public health, or geospatial analysis, and demonstrated expertise in corresponding analytic methods, is essential;
- Understanding how population dynamics can impact trends and operational challenges of sexual and reproductive health and rights, family planning and gender equality, is an asset;
- Understanding population linkages to climate change, poverty and global megatrends is an asset;
- Proven ability to lead and manage teams of high level experts to achieve demonstrable results is essential;
- Field experience in developing countries is essential;
- Extensive network within the academic and development community;
- Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English;
- Strong interest in development work, especially the mission of the United Nations Population Fund and dedication to the principles of the United Nations;
Languages: Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
