The Position:
 
Under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the Representative, the Communications Specialist implements the communications strategy, designs, manages and facilities the implementation of the UNFPA Afghanistan communications, advocacy and publication strategies with a view to raise the visibility of UNFPA’s work, promote media outreach and mobilize political and financial support for UNFPA’s programmes.  
 
Job Purpose:
 
In a complex operating environment, you will play a vital role in coordinating and leading communication and media activities around UNFPA’s work to meet the reproductive health and protection needs of Afghan women and girls. You will lead the development of the communications strategy tailored to the local context and taking into consideration humanitarian principles, working in close collaboration with the programme team.

Qualifications and Experience

Education:  
 
Advanced university degree in communications, mass media, public relations, journalism or other related fields.
 
Knowledge and Experience: 
 
• At least 5 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in communications;
• Substantive knowledge and practical experience in communication strategy development;
• Strong analytical ability and experience in representing an organization;
• Excellent English language skills, particularly in writing and proof-reading is required;
• Demonstrated team player in an international team environment;
• Demonstrated ability to develop and manage online applications;
• Knowledge and expertise in UNFPA’s mandate an advantage;
• Good knowledge of humanitarian response, prior experience in challenging and complex humanitarian response is desirable;
• Proficiency in office software applications.
 
Languages: 
 
Fluency in English is required; knowledge of other official UN languages would be an asset.
