The Position:

The Gender and Health Specialist leads the UNFPA office in Gao and is responsible for the overall implementation, monitoring and evaluation of UNFPA interventions in the region; management of implementation of humanitarian funding; and strengthening partnerships around the ICPD agenda.

S/he collaborates with UN agencies, academia, research and training institutions, professional societies, and act when necessary as focal point for interagency working groups in the substantive area.

He/she provides technical and managerial support to COs and partners in the implementation of initiatives aimed at eliminating sexual, gender based violence and other harmful practices and to increase access to Sexual and Reproductive health services to women and girls and the promotion of their rights.

The Gender and Health Specialist will work under the overall leadership of the Country Office Representative and will report to the Deputy Representative, working in close collaboration with the Humanitarian Coordinator.

Job Purpose:

The Gender and Health Specialist is the Head of the Gao Office and is responsible for leading the UNFPA team in the Gao region. The Gender and Health Specialist is responsible for providing technical guidance and leadership for the UNFPA programme in Gao; managing implementation of humanitarian funds for Gao; strengthening partnerships with local partners, donors and UN agencies in Gao; and, assuring close follow up of the security situation that impacts UNFPA programmes and staff in Gao.

He/she contributes to the co-ordination and management of quality, timely and integrated technical support to the Strategic Plan objective” By 2025, strengthened capacity of critical actors and systems in preparedness, early action and in the provision of life-saving interventions that are timely, integrated, conflict- and climate-sensitive, gender transformative and peace-responsive”

Key results expected of the Gender and Health Specialist include:

He/she provides or arrange technical assistance for program design, implementation, and evaluation in line with UNFPA rules and regulations.

Qualifications and Experience: 

Education:  

Advanced university degree in Public Health, Sociology, Gender, Economics, International Development, or other related fields.

Knowledge and Experience: 

  • At least 5 years of proven track record in leading / managing teams in humanitarian contexts;
  • At least 5 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in the substantive technical area, of which at least two years at the international level Strong technical knowledge in the science and application of social and behavioral change in the area of health services, family planning, youth and gender issues;
  • Experience in project management and in the region is required
  • Proven ability to produce demonstrable results;
  • Extensive network within the development community;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Ability to work in teams and in a multidisciplinary, complex and multicountry programme environment.

Languages: 

  • Fluency in English and French is required.
