Scope of Work:

The Foundation Partnerships Consultant will work in the Strategic Partnerships Branch (SPB) of the Division for Communications and Strategic Partnerships. The SPB is a dynamic team in charge of the corporate effort to ambitiously expand partnerships with private strategic partners, positioning UNFPA as the leading UN Agency on sexual and reproductive health and rights and the global agenda for Women and Girls. 

The purpose of this consultancy is to drive the expansion and development of new strategic foundation and philanthropy funding partnerships in key markets and regions globally. The Foundations portfolio has been identified as a key area of income growth for UNFPA. This role will be key in helping to take forward the strategic actions for foundations as identified in the Strategic Partnerships Framework and Foundation and Philanthropy Strategy.

During the term of this consultancy, incumbent will be expected to perform the following activities: 

  • Developing the pipeline of the top 10-20 new resource mobilization foundation partners globally and positioning UNFPA to secure at least 5 new foundation funding partnerships
  • Conducting deep dive research and mapping of the top foundation and philanthropies in key markets and regions 
  • Developing compelling concept notes, presentations, reports and project proposals drafted with the relevant technical colleagues in UNFPA to raise resources from foundation and philanthropy partners, that align with foundation issues/areas of interest and the UNFPA 3TRs
  • Organising thematic focused Foundation and Philanthropy partnership cultivation events
  • Support the work with Technical Teams, Representation Offices and Regional Offices to build relationships with foundation staff and screen, research, identify, plan, engage and cultivate strategic Foundation and Philanthropy prospects and fora in key markets globally.
  • Providing guidance, advice and tools to help build capacity for developing foundation partnerships at UNFPA
  • Support in preparing presentations, briefing notes, updates on progress of foundation expansion work, income and plans including updating the CRM

Required Expertise and Qualifications

Education:

  • An advanced degree in business, marketing, social sciences, public relations, communications or a related discipline

Knowledge and Experience:

  • At least 5 years of experience of relevant work experience in a not for profit or UN organisation responsible for private sector fundraising
  • All round experience of managing and developing foundation and private sector partnerships and private sector fundraising techniques and other forms of partnership engagement.
  • Proven track record in building and maintaining foundation and private sector partnerships and securing significant grants $1m+ from foundations, philanthropists and/or corporate foundations 
  • Network of global foundation and philanthropy contacts
  • Experience of effective communication with foundations and private sector, providing compelling cases for support, detailed proposals and reports.
  • Ability to understand and explain complex issues to external audiences and present the organization in an appealing and concise manner
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, networking and relationship-building skills, particularly with technical colleagues/staff and fundraisers
  • Knowledge of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies and techniques, with private sector donors particularly in the area of private foundation fundraising
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and networking skills 
  • Ability to take primary responsibility for projects and to complete them in a timely manner.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with prospective foundation donors, and technical teams and colleagues remotely.
  • Ability to use contact management database and to present and interpret data for monitoring purposes

Languages:

  • Fluency in English; knowledge of a second UN language is an asset
