The Position:
The Gender-Based Violence in Emergency Specialist is located in the Response and Technical Support Unit (RTSU), Humanitarian Office in Geneva. The post is part of the integrated technical team of experts, working under the close supervision of the Head of RTSU. The incumbent works under the day-to-day oversight and leadership of the GBV Adviser, s/he is the UNFPA focal point for GBV in Emergency (GBViE) response and programming, working in close collaboration with the GBV AoR team and the GBV IMS specialist.

UNFPA is seeking a dynamic candidate, who as a catalyst for the advancement of reproductive health and rights, gender-based violence prevention and response and population concerns within humanitarian preparedness and response frameworks, will support the Humanitarian Office.
Job Purpose:
The overall purpose of the Humanitarian Office is to facilitate the delivery of the UNFPA mandate by supporting humanitarian preparedness, response, and recovery actions in increasingly complex humanitarian situations, within globally agreed frameworks (2030 Agenda, Grand Bargain Commitments, Sendai Framework, etc.). The Humanitarian Office leads in leveraging and increasing effectiveness, efficiency and capacity of UNFPA staff and partners to scale up UNFPA’s role as a key global humanitarian actor. Through the Inter-Agency Standing Committee for Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (IASC) and other associated entities, the Humanitarian Office acts as a point of convergence on humanitarian activities, including policy, coordination, programming, advocacy, field capacity development, financing, innovation, partnerships, technical guidance and, crucially, thematic integration, ensuring complementarity between humanitarian and development action within the organization.
HO advocates among humanitarian agencies to include sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender-based violence prevention and response, the empowerment of young people, and population data into the overall humanitarian preparedness and response frameworks. The HO facilitates the development of UNFPA capacities to prepare and respond to emergencies and to ensure the fund is well equipped to deal with the context of fragility and disaster risk reduction. Furthermore, HO advances UNFPA’s strategic global leadership for the Gender-Based Violence Area of Responsibility for the development system.
The Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies (GBViE) Specialist works directly with UNFPA’s GBV Adviser to provide technical support on GBViE programming to UNFPA GBV preparedness, protection and response efforts in the field. S/he assesses needs, provides technical backstopping and supports capacity development for UNFPA GBV programmes on GBViE, working in particular with regional and country GBV colleagues. The incumbent works in close collaboration with SRH, GBV, youth and CVA colleagues in the Humanitarian Office and supports an integrated SRH and GBV approach.
Requirements:
Qualifications and Experience
Education:
Advanced university degree in social sciences, gender studies, humanitarian practice, international development, public health or related field.
Knowledge and Experience:
• 5 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in humanitarian programming in the field, essential;
• Experience in GBV programming in emergencies, essential;
• Experience in developing and facilitating training courses on GBV or a related subject, essential;
• Excellent interpersonal skills, creativity, strong project management skills, a positive and outgoing personality, and ability to interact successfully with people of different backgrounds and cultures
Languages:
• Fluency in English and French is required
• Working knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
