Purpose of consultancy:

Innovation is recognized as an accelerator to achieve all three transformative results of the UNFPA Strategic Plan 2022-2025: a) ending preventable maternal deaths; b) ending the unmet need for family planning; c) ending all forms of gender-based violence and harmful practices. To this end, UNFPA Arab States Regional Office (ASRO) supports ideation, prototyping and piloting of innovative approaches throughout thematic areas to serve as an incubator for country-level interventions. 

The Innovation Specialist (Consultant) will contribute to promoting innovation in country programmes and initiatives to deliver better, faster and more impactful results, and support the development of a regional evidence base to identify synergies, coherence and learning in the emerging innovation portfolio.

Scope of Work:

The ASRO Innovation work plan operates across three work streams including: 1) Programme excellence and technical assistance to country offices; 2) Learning and knowledge-sharing to create coherence and synergies on innovation; 3) Partnerships and resource mobilization to promote collaboration with partners and advance resources for innovation in the region.

This consultancy will support the three work streams with specific deliverables including in supporting country offices to articulate, scale-up and deliver innovation; building a regional evidence-base of excelling ideas and innovations; and showcasing innovation products for scale and visibility. 

Deliverables (specific output):

1. Provide targeted support to frontrunner COs, including overall programme technical assistance across select country offices including monitoring advancement of proposals received under the Call for Innovation 2022, as well as emerging initiatives. 20 December 2022

2. Liaise with programme teams and lead research, analysis and synthesis of data from pertinent sources for the final summary report of the existing innovation activities in ASRO inclusive of CO specific innovation profiles.  20 December 2022 

3. Proactively engage and lead ASRO innovation visibility efforts to ensure ASRO participation and representation in global and regional innovation events, including opportunities as well as region relevant thematic events, and forums. Some examples include support for a) UNFPA Global Innovation Fair and Awards 2022; and b) Regional joint proposal for the Global Innovation Fund. 30 November 2022

4. As requested draft, review and provide inputs to innovation documentation (concepts, briefs, and overviews), including to a) A concept note on ASRO Thematic Learning Series 2023; and b) An overview summarizing SRH Digital App/Platforms initiatives in Arab States. 30 November 2022

Duration: (3 Months)
Place where services are to be delivered: The consultancy is based in in Cairo Egypt

Delivery dates and how work will be delivered (e.g. electronic, hard copy etc.):All deliverables are subject to supervisor’s approval and clearance

Monitoring and progress control, including reporting requirements, periodicity format and deadline: Regular bi-weekly meetings
Supervisory arrangements: The Consultant will report to the Deputy Regional Director

 

 

Education: 

An Advanced (Master’s) University Degree in social sciences, innovation, gender studies, development studies or related field;

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Min. 2 years of experience in programme/project management, research methodology, data collection and/or coordination within health, gender, or innovation-related fields;
  • Experience in management of innovation programmes in low resource and/or humanitarian settings is desirable.
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office Package (Excel, PowerPoint etc.)
  • Good familiarity with UNFPA’s mandate.

Languages: Fluency in English is required. Arabic preferre
