Internship: Population and Development - SRH Vulnerability Analysis, Jakarta-Indonesia

The Position:

Under the direct supervision of the Population Data Analyst and advisory from the Programme Specialist of the Population and Development (PD Unit) of UNFPA Indonesia Country Office, the intern will support the team in the areas of Population data analysis, including:

1. identifying and analyzing existing literature and data of determinant factors (health facilities/skills of health workforce, socio-economic, environment/climate, etc.) to the increase in vulnerability in Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) that leads to a higher ratio of the maternal mortality; 
2. explore the development of SRH vulnerability index to allow prioritization of SRH areas (village/district/province) and interventions;
3. generating a comprehensive summary report highlighting key findings, gaps in knowledge, and potential recommendations for UNFPA Indonesia programme design.

A work-plan with achievements for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon. Periodic progress meetings will lead to a beneficial environment for the Intern enhancing her/his skills and capacity in areas related to UNFPA’s mandate.

You would be responsible for:

1. Conduct a thorough literature review on determinant factors for the vulnerability of SRH in Indonesia.
2. Identify and analyze relevant data from government agencies, research institutions, and UN organizations, including targeted areas receiving health facilities funded by multilateral loan;
3. Apply data analysis skills to synthesize findings from various sources.
4. Prepare a well-structured and informative report summarizing key findings, including:

• The different ways determinant factors influence SRH quality of services;
• Existing data gaps and areas require further research.
• Potential recommendations for UNFPA Indonesia's work on priority areas and programmes to reduce the vulnerability of SRH services.

1. Prepare presentations to share the findings with UNFPA staff and stakeholders.
2. Assist the Population Development Specialist with other relevant tasks to enhance hands-on experience in population and development analysis. 

 

Qualifying for an Internship

All interns must meet the following educational and other eligibility requirements:

Educational requirements

1. Academic background in Demography, Geography, Data Sciences, Public Health, Environmental Science, or Social sciences; 
2. Be enrolled in a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent) and have completed one full academic year

Other eligibility requirements

1. Demonstrate interest in the field of development, particularly on the issue of sexual and reproductive health;
2. Strong analytical skills and experience with data analysis tools (e.g., SPSS, R, GIS/Spatial analysis);
3. Excellent research and writing skills;
4. Demonstrate written and spoken proficiency in Indonesian and English; 
5. Ability to work independently and manage time effectively; and
6. Demonstrate ability to adapt to new environments and to establish and maintain good working relations with individuals of different cultural backgrounds.

Your Experiences 

• Some experience in working with development agencies, including in volunteer capacity. 
• Fluency in English. Knowledge of other languages is an asset. 
• Experience in conducting evaluation for a project is an asset.
• Knowledge in gender and social inclusion is an asset.
• Strong analytical and writing skills.
• Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members from different national and cultural backgrounds.

5. Understand the dynamics of operational and programme support and communications to the field, and at the level of HQ

An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a UNFPA staff member is not eligible for an internship with UNFPA

 

Financial Aspects:

Interns do not receive a salary or any other form of remuneration from UNFPA. The costs associated with an intern's participation in the programme must be assumed either by the nominating institution, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students, or by the students themselves, who will have to meet living expenses as well as make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and other requirements. However, they receive a stipend to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, if not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government, foundation, or scholarship programme. The stipend is based on the intern’s agreed place of work, which may be different from the duty station of the hiring office in cases of remote arrangements. 

In addition, applicants must have medical insurance for the duration of the internship. Proof of insurance will need to be submitted before the internship begins. UNFPA does not provide medical insurance for interns.
