Background
The Asia Pacific region is the most disaster prone region in the world. The region also experiences a high level of man-made disasters and civil conflicts and houses over half of the world’s refugee population.
The region is also experiencing the impact of climate change in the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters. Despite considerable efforts by governments and humanitarian actors to improve lives of displaced and crises affected populations, gaps remain in addressing reproductive and gender needs of women and girls within National Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) or National Disaster Management (DRM) strategies, plans and programmes. It is imperative for countries to be better prepared to address life-saving reproductive health needs of women and girls affected by disasters and conflicts, and to protect them from abuse and violence in times of emergencies.
In line with the 2nd generation humanitarian response strategy, and as outlined in the new Regional Programme Action Plan (2014-2017), APRO aims to work with country offices and partners to improve efforts on emergency preparedness, response and recovery.
