Job Purpose

The post is located in the Multilateral Affairs Branch (MAB) of the Division for Governance and Multilateral Affairs (DGM).

The staff member reports directly to the Chief of the Branch; assists the Branch Chief in the development of strategies and policies to guide UNFPA’s positions in inter-government and inter-agency coordination processes bearing on the agenda of the International Conference on Population and Development. The staff member acts as Officer-in-Charge in the absence of the Branch Chief. 

The incumbent works closely with representatives of Member States to influence inter-governmental decision-making processes. She/he also works closely with staff members of the UN Secretariat, relevant agencies, funds and programmes to influence inter-agency collaboration. Internally, she/he provides briefings on developments in the inter-governmental and inter-agency processes on strategic issues related to the mandate of UNFPA, and on important  upcoming meetings that require participation of the ED or DEDs or Director of Divisions. She/he coordinates inter-divisional responses in relationship with all levels as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

Education: 

  • Masters Degree or equivalent in Social Sciences, Diplomacy, Public Relations or Development Studies.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • 10 years of relevant and increasingly responsible professional and managerial experience in development and multilateral affairs at the international level. Strong knowledge of human rights, global health and humanitarian affairs an asset;
  • Knowledge of the ICPD agenda and related intergovernmental processes and negotiations essential; Field experience with UNFPA an asset.
  • Strong inter-personal skills, strong public speaking skills; excellent speech writing and report writing skills.
     

Languages:

  • Proficiency in English required. Knowledge of an additional UN language an asset.
