Position Summary:

The Programme Associates are located in the country office (CO) in Yangon - one reports to the Humanitarian Response Specialist  and the other reports to the Proramme Specialist (Programme Management).

Job Purpose

UNFPA expands the possibilities for women and young people to lead healthy and productive lives. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programmes to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV and AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect.  Advancing gender equality and promoting the empowerment of women is a key programme priority of UNFPA defined in UNFPA Strategic plan (2014-2017).

UNFPA manages the “Women and Girls First Initiative” (2016-2018), a 14 million USD multi-year UNFPA-donor joint trust fund. Under the Women and Girls First programme, UNFPA is committed to leading the international community and supporting national stakeholders in addressing gaps in gender equality, improving sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, responding to and preventing gender based violence (GBV) and integrating gender equality and women's rights perspectives into national policies, development frameworks and laws. Through these key outcomes, UNFPA will also be seeking to achieve improved and strengthened access to justice and increased participation of women in the peace process, through economic and political empowerment. The programme focus areas include Rakhine, Kachin and Northern Shan States and Kayin state with additional technical support to other areas in the South Eastern region including Kayah and Mon States.

Emergency preparedness and humanitarian assistance is integrated in UNFPA’s third country programme and remains an important function of the organization. UNFPA in line with global strategy contributes to strengthening national capacity to provide sexual and reproductive health services, gender based violence prevention and response and data issues in humanitarian settings.

Under overall guidance of the UNFPA Deputy Representative, with direct supervision from Humanitarian Response Specialist, and in close coordination with UNFPA CO in Yangon and field offices, the Programme Associate supports the design, planning and management of UNFPA’s country programme, including humanitarian programme and Women and Girls First initiative by providing and managing data inputs, providing logistical support, monitoring project implementation and following up on recommendations. The Programme Associate applies established systems and procedures and assists in the creation of substantive knowledge by compiling, synthesizing and analyzing information relevant to population and development, reproductive health and gender issues. S/he is instrumental in facilitating programme/ project implementation using and developing appropriate mechanisms and systems and ensuring compliance with established procedures.

Requirements:

Qualifications and Experience 

Education:

Completed Secondary Level Education required. First level university degree desirable.

Knowledge and Experience:

Seven years of relevant experience in programme/ project management.
 Previous experience in the UN is an asset;
 Strong interpersonal and organizational skills;
 Computer literacy - Word, Excel, Power-point, etc.;
 Good writing and communication skills.
 Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment

Languages:

Fluency in English is required.
