The Position:

The UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme to Eliminate Female Genital Mutilation is the world’s largest response to change entrenched social norms an eliminate female genital mutilation and transform gender norms.

In 2018, the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme to Eliminate Female Genital Mutilation entered its Phase III which scales-up support to 19 countries from Africa, the Middle East and Asia and strategic actions at regional level in consultation with regional bodies such as the African Union. Using both top-down and bottom-up approaches, the Joint Programme ensures increased focus on adolescent girls and women’s agency, catalyzes a global movement to eliminate FGM, increases international and regional attention to FGM as a priority agenda, supports the creation of a regional political accountability mechanism and civil society dynamic towards the elimination of female genital mutilation, with strengthened efforts to provide services to hard-to-reach populations. The Joint Programme is strengthened through a revised Monitoring and Evaluation Framework, including Value for Money and innovative indicators on Social Norms. 

The Global Coordinator of the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme works under the overall direction and leadership of the Gender and Human Rights of the Technical Division. S/He is a senior adviser on issues related to gender and social norms and s/he is lead coordinator of the UNFPA-UNICEF Trust Fund on Female Genital Mutilation overseeing its efficient implementation and attainment of desired results at the global, regional and country level.

Education:  

• Master Degree on social sciences, public health or related field, Demography, International Relations, International Development, or other field directly related to the substantive area of work. 

Knowledge and Experience: 

• A minimum of 10 years’ experience of increasingly responsible professional experience in public administration and international development, of which at least 4 years in the thematic area. 

• Operational and managerial experience working with governments and CSOs at the field level.

• Experience working in-country on a gender, child protection and SRH topic.

• Good management experience leading technical teams towards bold targets and goals 

• Field experience is essential.

• The incumbent is expected to:

-be an expert and recognized authority in the area of work;

-Have the necessary skillset to manage a program with broad geographic reach, and that requires working across other divisions within the larger organization

-Have the proven ability to lead and manage teams of mid level experts to achieve demonstrable results;

-Have excellent communication skills, speaking and writing in English;

-Strong interest in development work, especially the mission of the United Nations and dedication to the principles of the United Nations; 

Languages: 

• Fluency in English and French is required.
