Position Summary:

 The Regional Health Systems Adviser post is located in Johannesburg, South Africa at the Regional Office for East and Southern Africa.  S/he is under the overall supervision of the Regional Director and reports directly to the Deputy Regional Director. S/he convenes the Integrated Sexual Reproductive Health team, delivers the health system strengthening components of the Regional Programme, provides and coordinates technical advice and support to Country Offices in the ESA region and leads engagement with key regional strategic health partners and initiatives, such as H6+ and AU’s Africa Health Strategy, CARMMA and the Maputo Plan of Action.    

Requirements and Qualifications:

Education:  Post-graduate university degree in a development related area – Health, health economics, sociology, demography, public health policy, international development, health management or other related field.

Knowledge and Experience:      

  • 10 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in development programmes and UNFPA SRHR mandate areas;
  • Demonstrated expertise in health systems strengthening to deliver integrated SRHR results, including evidence of innovative approaches and cutting edge knowledge, essential;
  • Strong track record of strategic and technical leadership, contribution to technical knowledge management products and proven ability to produce demonstrable results;
  • Work experience from developing countries’ context is a necessity; multi country experience within the East and Southern Africa region is a strong asset;
  • Demonstrated expertise in advocacy, resource mobilization, negotiations and/or policy dialogue, essential;
  • Experience in leading/managing knowledge product development and dissemination;
  • Ability to build and motivate / lead cross-cutting teams to produce client-oriented results;
  • Demonstrated ability to mobilise resources and network within the development and academic communities;
  • Technical as well as programming experience;
  • UN inter-agency experience in a strong asset;
  • Field experience is a strong asset.

Languages: Fluency in English is required; working knowledge of French and/or Portuguese is an asset.
