The position:
Bangladesh is ranked the fifth highest-risk country in the world on the UN World Risk Index, experiencing cyclical flooding and cyclones, as well as other natural disasters. Over the past year Cox’s Bazar has become the largest refugee camp in the world following the influx of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya from Myanmar. In order to be better prepared for humanitarian response UNFPA Bangladesh is prepositioning life-saving sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence supplies in order to ensure these commodities are immediately available for use when disasters strike. The prepositioning of these supplies is funded through the Regional Pre-Positioning initiative, managed from the Asia-Pacific Regional Office in Bangkok, that aims to strengthen emergency preparedness to address critical sexual and reproductive health and protection needs. Strategically prepositioning supplies has enabled UNFPA to respond faster, better and more efficiently to humanitarian crises.
Under the supervision of the International Operations Manager and working closely with the Humanitarian Specialist and procurement teams of UNFPA Bangladesh, the Humanitarian Logistics Assistant is responsible for providing logistics and administrative support to ensure the successful implementation of the Regional Prepositioning Initiative workplan in Bangladesh. They will be responsible for ensuring the effective management of emergency commodities and supplies stored at Homebound warehouse, including receipt and inspection, maintaining systems to record, track and report on supplies, suitable storage of supplies, transportation and distribution of supplies in emergencies, and reporting in line with UNFPA policies and donor requirements.
The incumbent will work in close collaboration with the operations and programme teams, implementing partners, and other agencies and will be responsible for liaising with relevant humanitarian stakeholders working in relevant sectors/Clusters, sub-clusters to ensure inclusion of commodities and supplies specific to UNFPA’s mandate in the overall national humanitarian response plan.
Requirements:
Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in logistics management or equivalent relevant professional certification in areas such as transport, distribution and supply chain management.
Knowledge and Experience:
Education:
· Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience in a public or private sector.
· High level of proficiency on data capture through compatible and comprehensible software; Excel / Access
· Experience in quantitative and qualitative data analyses & archiving is an asset
· Managing medical supplies distribution, storage, transportation operations in emergency settings (military, commercial or with an international organization).
· Experience and knowledge of UN systems, especially UNFPA, an advantage.
· Good knowledge of humanitarian response.
· Proficiency in English
