The Technical Specialist will be located in the Sexual and Reproductive Health Branch of Technical Division. He/she will report to the Technical Specialist coordinating UNFPA’s work under the UNFPA-UNICEF Global Programme to End Child Marriage and UNFPA’s Action for Adolescent Girls.

Job Purpose:

Over the past decade, the world has reached consensus on the importance of investing in the rights, health and development of adolescents, particularly adolescent girls, to enhance the lives of individuals and to build healthy and prosperous societies. Consistent institutional advocacy by UNFPA and partners on child marriage - affecting more than 750 million girls and women alive today - and its connection to girls’ sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) has already resulted in greater support for ending the practice, particularly among governments of countries where the practice is widespread. The world has recognized that child marriage is a violation of human rights, and robs girls of their education, health, and long-term prospects represented in the adoption of elimination of child marriage as a key target to advance gender equality within the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) framework.

As part of its Strategic Plan, UNFPA has committed to enhancing investments towards ending child marriage and gender-based violence, and reducing adolescent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections among adolescent girls. This work, operationalized in UNFPA’s Action for Adolescent Girls initiative and the UNFPA-UNICEF Global Programme to Accelerate Action to End Child Marriage, was built on evidence generated since the 2000s by programmes that have shown positive impacts on the most marginalized adolescent girls at risk of and affected by child marriage. Underlying the girl-centered programming are the principles of implementing sustainable, rights-based interventions, supporting gender equality and good governance practices.
