Sudan Gets New Ambulances for Obstetric Emergencies

  • 07 April 2003

UNFPA recently provided the Government of Sudan with six new four-wheel drive vehicles equipped as ambulances. The vehicles will enhance the Sudanese national population and health efforts by ensuring speedy access to emergency care, particularly for pregnant women in need of prompt medical attention.

The new UNFPA contribution is intended to help reduce maternal mortality rates in Sudan, which, at 509 deaths for every 100,000 live births, is among the highest in the world. The vehicles were handed over to the government in March during a ceremony at the Ministry of International Cooperation.
