UNFPA Credited for Delivering Results

LONDON – The UK Government has given UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, high marks for effectiveness, as well as additional funding to tackle problems faced by the world’s poorest people, according to a press release issued by DFID, the UK Department for International Development.
The UK aid agency assessed the impact and efficiency of aid delivery of several UN agencies against a number of specific indicators, including numbers of births in developing countries attended by skilled personnel, prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and collaboration with other UN agencies on poverty reduction. UNFPA and UNAIDS were both given top marks.
“This recognition is an acknowledgment that we are working together to support countries and communities to achieve the goals set by the ICPD Programme of Action and also the MDGs,” said UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya A. Obaid. “With this tremendous achievement, we can be energized to move forward and improve further for the benefit of the people we serve.”
In addition to the £20 million core funding UNFPA receives from the UK, it has been allocated another payment of £2.05 million.
