MEDIA ADVISORY: High Level Officials to Examine Impact of Better Health on Achieving the Millennium Development Goals

28 June 2005

UNITED NATIONS, New York— How can better public health, particularly reproductive health, help end maternal death and the spread of HIV/AIDS, and eradicate extreme poverty by 2015? How do investments in reproductive health contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals? What impact does maternal mortality have on the quality of life of families and communities? What challenges do countries face in their efforts to improve health in the context of poverty alleviation? What does it take to strengthen health systems and ensure access to critical services for the poor? How to address "major killers," including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria?

These, and other topics, will be the focus of a United Nations round table as part of the High Level Segment on "Achieving the internationally agreed development goals, including those contained in the Millennium Declaration, as well as implementing the outcomes of the major United Nations conferences and summits; progress made, challenges and opportunities."
