Media Advisory: Poverty Reduction Efforts Will Fail Unless Leaders Keep Promises to World's Women

Press Release

ALL MATERIALS EMBARGOED UNTIL 1200 GMT on 12 OCTOBER 2005
UNITED NATIONS, New York — Global efforts to "make poverty history" are bound to fail if world leaders do not act now to end gender discrimination, according to the State of World Population 2005 report by UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund. Unless they live up to promises made to the world’s women and young people, these leaders will not be able to meet poverty reduction goals agreed to at the 2000 Millennium Summit and reaffirmed at last month's World Summit in New York.
This year's report, The Promise of Equality: Gender Equity, Reproductive Health and the Millennium Development Goals, makes the case for investing in women and young people, who are now the majority of the world’s population.
The Promise of Equality is under embargo until 1200 GMT on 12 October. Journalists may access the embargoed report and related materials—a summary, press release, features, charts and photos—on the web before then by registering online at /swp/2005/presskit/.
