The report summarizes progress achieved in maternal health in 20 countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. It provides country-specific information that can help individual countries and the region as a whole to analyse and promote dialogue about national priorities for maternal health. It can also serve as a reference for planning and programming maternal health interventions.

Countries in the region have made a commitment to reforming their health-care systems but are at varying stages of implementing changes. Most countries have seen an increase in the provision and use of modern methods of contraception, yet for many, the range of choices remains limited.

Common challenges include the need for better data collection and analysis, higher quality services, and inequities in access to and utilization of reproductive health care.
