Central African Republic Situation Report #7 - 3 September 2024

Ongoing conflict, flooding and disease outbreaks in Central African Republic (CAR) is culminating into a dire humanitarian situation. As of 30 June, there were 453,301 internally displaced persons. Recent torrential rains and strong winds have destroyed 1,700 houses and caused the displacing of a further 3,300 people.

Around 2.5 million people are experiencing severe food insecurity; the majority of whom are displaced or affected by armed conflict. Pregnant and breastfeeding women and their children are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition, and hunger may also increase women and girls’ risks to violence, sexual exploitation and abuse, and force them to resort to negative coping mechanisms.

Gender-based violence (GBV) rates remain persistently high in the CAR. According to GBVIMS data, rapes constituted 34% of GBV cases in the first half of 2024.

An outbreak of Mpox was declared in CAR in July due to new infections reported in several towns and the capital, Bangui. Contacting Mpox during pregnancy is particularly dangerous as it can lead to the loss of the pregnancy or stillbirth, death of the newborn infant, or complications for the mother.

During July, UNFPA reached 14,230 people with GBV prevention, mitigation and response activities, provided sexual and reproductive health.

In 2024, UNFPA requires US$19.2 million to provide reproductive health and protection services to women and girls in need in CAR. As of the end of July, 80% (US$ 15.4 million) still remains unfunded.
