Nigeria Situation Report #2 - September 2024

Resource date: Dec 2024

Author: UNFPA Nigeria

Flooding and armed conflict in northeast Nigeria have left over 7.9 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, including 1.8 million women of reproductive age and 222,000 pregnant women. The severe impact of floods, compounded by cholera outbreaks and food insecurity, has heightened health and protection risks for women and girls, particularly in overcrowded and unsanitary displacement camps. With the lean season worsening food insecurity for 5 million people in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe (BAY) states, the humanitarian crisis remains critical, requiring urgent action to address the needs of affected populations.

UNFPA has implemented lifesaving interventions across 39 local government areas in the BAY states, providing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services to nearly 20,000 individuals and reaching over 11,000 people with gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and response activities. Efforts include distributing 2,765 dignity kits, operationalizing a new women and girls safe space in Plateau State, and equipping health facilities with 44 reproductive health kits to support safe births and obstetric emergencies. UNFPA also sustained community awareness campaigns, training nearly 2,700 GBV service providers and outreach workers while collaborating with partners to improve service coordination through safety audits, mapping, and technical resource development.

UNFPA Nigeria’s 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan requires $20.9 million, but only 31 per cent of funding has been secured, leaving a significant gap of $14.3 million. Without additional resources, UNFPA faces challenges in scaling up critical services for women and girls in crisis-affected areas. UNFPA urgently appeals for increased funding to bridge this gap and ensure continued support for the most vulnerable populations.
