The February earthquakes destroyed thousands of buildings, including hospitals and health facilities. In Türkiye, 9.1 million people, including 226,000 pregnant women, have been directly affected by the earthquakes which have destroyed or damaged much of the health infrastructure in the four most affected provinces, where 70 per cent of family health centres are damaged and 60 per cent of ob/gyn services are not operational.
UNFPA has been on the ground since day 1 providing humanitarian support to women and girls in the affected areas:
So far, $7.6 million, including UNFPA emergency funds, has been raised for the initial rapid response to cover life-saving SRH and GBV services. That represents 39 per cent of UNFPA’s appeal for $19.7 million for the UNFPA earthquake response in Türkiye. The important gap in funding could have devastating consequences, with potentially significant impacts on the affected communities.
