One in four young people is affected by conflict and violence, yet young people are often excluded from peacebuilding processes. Aligned to Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security, there is a growing movement to create spaces and opportunities for young peacebuilders to transform communities and promote sustainable peace. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development also emphasises the meaningful inclusion of youth to promote peaceful and inclusive societies.

A new report, ‘What works to amplify the rights and voices of youth in peace and resilience building?’ aims to guide future programming in this area, and accelerate the implementation of the United Nations Youth Strategy. The report includes lessons on youth engagement in peace and resilience building, following a meta-synthesis of over 120 United Nations evaluations. Co-led by the Evaluation Offices of UNFPA and UNICEF, the meta-synthesis involved 11 organizations, including the Office of the Secretary General’s Envoy on Youth and youth-led groups.

On 27 April 2023, the report was formally launched at a side event at ECOSOC Youth Forum 2023. The event utilized the lessons to trigger a global discussion to enhance youth engagement in peace and resilience building and advocate for increased opportunities for youth in accountability processes.
