Tents create safe spaces and access to reproductive health services

UNFPA responds to humanitarian emergencies by procuring and distributing tents, providing women and adolescents access to reproductive health services while preserving their dignity and security.

In times of both new and pro-longed conflicts, as well as devastating weather events, these multi-functioning tents serve as safe spaces, creating a supportive environment for women and their families. These safe spaces ensure privacy for obtaining reproductive healthcare services, play a crucial role in preventing gender-based violence, and offer shelter from harsh weather conditions.

"With the tents installed, we have already started to see an increase in women seeking health services”, said nurse Lica Estevão, Zambezia, Mozambique.

After Cyclone Freddy struck Mozambique, 23-year-old Diana Dino faced the challenge of giving birth without access to health services due to the cyclone's damage. However, hope returned when newly-installed tents provided by the Government of Mozambique and UNFPA allowed health services to continue. Diana became the first person attended to within these tents and successfully gave birth to a healthy son.

In 2022, UNFPA reached 22 million women, girls, and young people with sexual and reproductive health services across 50 countries. Moreover, UNFPA supported 1,000 safe spaces for women and girls in 42 countries.
