Cameroon Situation Report #24 - October 2024

Severe flooding in Cameroon’s Far North region has displaced over 365,000 people and caused widespread destruction of homes, health centres, and agricultural assets. The floods, coupled with ongoing violence and security challenges along key routes, have exacerbated an already dire situation. The destruction of infrastructure and the rise of diseases due to contaminated water present a growing public health risk, with priority needs focusing on health, food, shelter, and water sanitation.

UNFPA has responded by delivering life-saving sexual and reproductive health services, reaching over 3,500 individuals, including pregnant women who received antenatal care and safe delivery support. UNFPA has also deployed mobile clinics, supported 45 midwives to provide obstetric care, and treated hundreds of women for obstetric complications. Additionally, UNFPA has implemented gender-based violence prevention and response programs, reaching thousands of displaced persons with awareness-raising campaigns and psychosocial support, while mobile clinics provide services to hard-to-reach areas.

In 2024, UNFPA appealed for US$ 11.07 million to meet the life-saving sexual and reproductive health and protection needs of 129,149 individuals affected by the floods in Cameroon. However, to date, only US$ 3.92 million (30%) of the appeal has been secured. An additional US$ 1.17 million is urgently required to address the most pressing SRH and protection needs for women and girls in the flood-affected regions, where ongoing rains and rising rivers threaten to worsen the humanitarian situation and further disrupt access to essential services.
