UNFPA CAR Situation Report #9

Ongoing conflict and criminality, flooding, and disease outbreaks in Central African Republic (CAR) continue to cumulate into a dire humanitarian situation. Approximately 2.8 million people are affected, including an estimated 73,000 pregnant women.

Heavy rainfall has led to floods that have affected several regions of the country, driving displacement and causing significant damage. Many roads are impassable, leading to increased prices for basic necessities and disrupting access to essential services, including sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence services.

In addition to Mpox, which was declared in CAR in July, a dengue outbreak was announced in Bengui on 6 September, after 13 cases of dengue were confirmed by the Pasteur Institute of Bangui.

During September, UNFPA reached 16,380 people with sensitization activities on GBV prevention and available services. Through 11 safe spaces supported by UNFPA, 5,204 women and girls participated in psychosocial activities, including literacy and livelihood training. UNFPA also supported 19 health facilities, where 598 safe deliveries were assisted by qualified personnel and 32 cesarean sections were successfully performed.

As of the end of September 2024, UNFPA still a funding gap of US$ 11.5 million for CAR. UNFPA has only secured US$ 7.5 million (39%) of the U$S 19 million needed to deliver critical sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence services in CAR in 2024.
