Heavy rains have caused destruction and displacement in Yemen, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation. Sa’ada Al Hodeidah, Al Mahwit, Raymah and Taizz governorates are among the hardest hit areas. Around 180,000 people have been affected. Female-headed households make up over 20 percent of those receiving emergency relief.
Health facilities in the districts of Bajel, Zuhrah, Zaydiah and Marawa have been impacted, including the UNFPA-supported Al Thawrah and Al Mahabisha referral hospitals, but they remain fully functional.
The UNFPA-led Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) is delivering life-saving aid to the most vulnerable individuals. As of 14 August, 60,081 individuals have been registered for emergency relief and some 44,772 people have received assistance through the RRM in Al Hodeidah, Hajjah, Al Mawhit and Raymah, including essential hygiene items, such as soap, towels, and food.
An estimated 150,000 blankets (5 blankets per family) are urgently needed for RRM kits, which will cover winterization needs. There is also a shortage of certain items included in the RRM which need to be replenished.
Damage to roads and infrastructure resulting from the flooding is impacting the reach of RRM teams especially in areas submerged under water.
